Comfort and Joy

We call this one our Natural Tree. A gorgeous smelling fresh cut tree adorned with only white lights and thrift store ornaments, angels and birds mostly.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.

Mother sits against the wall and eats with eyes elsewhere.
Father cuts his meat with polite handwork.
I jump, guzzle, pop, and bolt. To keep the flow flowing.
Daughter looks around in study, eyes wide with makeup black.
Husband kills the beast for dinner with a carving knife.
Auntie eats like a lady in waiting.
I decided against the Vienna boys choir for dinner music, opting instead of the scrape of forks and the music of gentle conversation.
Put the dogs outside and rewarded them with ham in lieu of canned dog food later.
Some gifts were opened but gone is the glee of gifting.
We are serious people, contemplating a sad world. We love each other, but we have hurt each other too.
Coffee and cookies summarize the day. Sweet and bitter. Tough and crumbly.
At night we watch movies and nibble, the dogs sleep satisfied. When we pass in the hall
We smile a little longer.

Ah but we smile longer and we are content in our discontent.

Beautiful Rain, you words paint pictures in my mind more articulately than the masters.

hugs and love,
Lori

"Tough and crumbly". Nobody could have said it better.

The trees are always the best part of The Season, aren't they? Gee, I wish I could be poetic instead of sarcastic and complainy. It's so much more balanced, lovely and, well..., poetic!

Wishing you all things good and beautiful in 2008!
