In the coldness of winter

I reflect on my life as I sit indoors hearing the gusts of wind outside. There is no quick escape from your thoughts or your family. We are all indoors, in bed early, against the cold and the dark.

We had snow, freezing rain, ice and high winds. I just dug my car out. I seem to enjoy working outdoors in the cold. I don't want to drive on the messy roads, but I have to.

I want to hibernate, blog, write poetry, watch movies, cook, and sleep. But the world says go, go, go. Ignore the seasons, ignore the ancient wisdom, always we are trying to act like we are not human, and not tied to the rhythms of the earth.

I could have been a farmer's wife. Canning and sewing, reading and crafting all winter. I long for simple things right now. A bowl of soup, found chapstick, and the spotting of brilliant red cardinals at the bird feeder.

Happy Late Valentine's day. Eat more chocolate.
